orientation day 2
so it was the second day of orientation and it was already mad. all the new students met at the modular theater for what was listed on our orientation packet as a “First Year Experience Activity”. i figured it was going to be an ice breaker of sorts.
but it felt like we were getting a show.
it started with a countdown of resources or animal death tolls on the planet or something. and then we saw a man appear silhouetted behind the screen.
so yeah, uh very artsy. it really cemented the reality of going to art school. it was neat though. and much more entertaining than the years of boring assemblies.
and this man will be my color and design teacher.
but he did say things that made sense.
he had bills in his hand and asked someone in the front row to confirm its authenticity. they said it looked real , but i’m not sure they were able to get a through inspection. he said it was 200 dollars and asked us what we would do with it. immediately i thought to say “put it towards this damn tuition” but lost the nerve after he called on others. no one was saying it though! some people said they’d pay off a pet bill or make a board game (a really cool one). and he decided to call on one last person and they ended up saying it and people clapped. totally could have been my claim to fame you guys.
anyway after we were done he lit a fire in a can and tossed the money in there. calarts ball so hard. he tried to make the point that if we miss a class we are wasting approx. 200 bucks. (EDIT: okay a bfa2 student said it was real. i guess this is his baller shot caller move)
he had us critique some classical art pieces and tell us why we liked or didn’t like it. there was one painting with a bunch of cats and this girl raised her hand to explain why she didn’t like it. she proceeded to tell everyone that she didn’t like it because she is allergic to cats.
he also had us say our names all at once. we did it a few times. he said it was a unique sound and this was our collective name.
he also had us sing a song
and he ended his one man show with a few standing ovations.
in which we were left to a few skits to teach us about how to behave.
and i left shortly after to wander and get lost.
